Evaluation

Personally, I am aware of my ability to choreograph appropriate movements on stage. I

am able to do this accordingly to song choices and io have been able to display this skill

within this project. On stage, I ensured that every member of the band had some kind of

movement in every song in order to provide a visually entertaining performance.

Another one of my creative strengths is my ability to vary my vocals depending on what

songs we have to perform. I can sing several different genres because I am aware of the

kind of techniques used in those different genres. For example, in our cover of Immigrant

Song I was able to use a rock sounding vocal and then switch to a softer vocal to do

backing vocals for All Along The Watchtower and Don’t Stop Me Now. This perfectly

displayed my vocal strengths by having such a varied selection of songs.

I am able to work well collaboratively with my peers. This project is focused on our

collaborative abilities which made it clear that I needed to work closely alongside my

peers. This included adding some backing vocals for an original written by our guitarist

named What Tomorrow Brings. Through this I was able to show my skills in teamwork,

this is key in a professional workplace.

I was also able to show my problem solving and conversation skills in this term. Seeing as

we were given the freedom to choose our project themes and songs, I was able to voice

my opinions confidently and have mature conversations about the project with my peers.

Being able to resolve issues with song choices and even disagreements was a strength I

was able to show this term, this is also key in a professional environment.

Personally, I think I could develop leaving my comfort zone with my style of singing. I

sometimes feel uncomfortable when singing a genre that is not rock. Despite being able

to sing many genres, I would rather stick to things I am used to. This is a flaw of mine that

I would like to develop as I feel it could free me creatively as a vocalist.

I would also like to focus more on the proper use of vocal techniques while performing.

When on stage, I tend to forget to use specific vocal techniques meaning I just sing the

song without much thought for the way my vocals deliver it. Other than expressing the

emotions the song displays, I often forget to use techniques such as twang to help me hit

certain notes. I also forget to use vocal cries, I do these naturally but on stage I forget that

I can utilise them to convey emotion.

I failed to attend some of my vocal lessons. This was mainly due to our lesson ending just

as it began but otherwise was because I forgot. This possibly set me back a little bit in

terms of my technical ability vocally as it meant I was spending less time actually making

sure the way in which I sang the songs was healthy and correct.

I also did not use my time management skills very well this term. There were some times

in which I began my project diary on a Monday and documented things that we did

through the week as it went on but most weeks I forgot to do this. This meant that on a

Thursday I then had to recall the entire week from memory and recordings.

As a group, we were able to deliver an entertaining performance. Every member of the

band was paying close attention to the sound quality of the music we performed as well

as our visual performance. Working together to create such an entertaining set was worth

it in the final performance. We had excellent audience interaction and were able to

ensure that we put our all into the performance.

We also were able to use our varied music tastes to create an interesting and varied set.

Despite us all having very different tastes in both movies and music we were able to make

sure that our set made sense according to our theme. The song choices were executed

accordingly to our different playing styles, making this a very audibly entertaining

performance.

As a group, we were able to identify which songs would be right for everyone. This meant

we considered everybody's different tastes, styles of playing and the theme of the

project. This displayed a great sense of teamwork as we considered every member of the

group with our decision making, this is an important skill in a workplace because it can

condense disagreements and create a mature environment for everybody to freely

express any concerns or suggestions.

We were able to use out time keeping skills at multiple points in this project. As a band,

we became very good at arriving on time for sessions as well as consistently timing our

set as it developed until it was complete. We also were able to have all of our songs learnt

and ready for the performance around two weeks prior to the actual performance. This

ensured we had time to focus on our coursework, this meant we were also able to display

great multitasking skills.

As a group, we had conflicting ideas for our song choices at the beginning of the project.

This was because some members felt as though they did not get much choice, however,

some suggestions that were given and dismissed were not relevant to our theme of

movies. This meant that not every band member had the chance to perform the song

they wanted to, because we only had a fifteen minute slot for the performance, we were

only able to fit in a certain amount of songs.

One of our band members chose improvisation as his personal project and this did not go

as planned in the performance. The point of improvisation is that its spontaneous and

unplanned. At the start of the project, this was not going well as it was just scales and

often notes that were off-key. This would confuse other band members and even make us

slip off-key in songs. Towards the end of the project this got better but in the actual

performance there were a couple of mistakes made.

Some members of the band did not have good attendance. This led to some practices not

being very productive because the whole band could not come up with decisions with

members missing as this may cause confusion and even disagreements. Members not

attending rehearsal set us back by quite a bit especially at the start of the term.

In the beginning of the project we did not have much attention to detail. This is important in a professional environment as it can help you distinguish issues in the work place even if they are small. Instead of listening to the songs in great detail, we had just learnt them and didn’t ay much attention to dynamics and such.
